We’re Hiring!
Restore Mass Ave is a small, volunteer-run nonprofit whose mission is to restore the historic landscape and tree canopy of Embassy Row, the two miles of Massachusetts Avenue NW from Wisconsin Avenue east to Dupont Circle, Washington’s most famous diplomatic street.
RMA succeeds by being a family of helpers including great volunteers. Many have donated time, knowledge and goodwill to spread a culture of stewardship for this Grand Avenue landscape. Today our work is recognized locally and internationally, so more is being asked of us. We should expand by adding talent. Maybe your talent!
Below are positions we have in mind. To apply use the form below. Or use the form to suggest other ways your talents can help “re-green Embassy Row.”
What You Can Accomplish
Executive Assistant – Part-time Paid
We seek someone with knowledge of urban trees and with nonprofit administrative experience to advance our exciting program. Internally she/he will track project assignments, support monthly Board meetings, and help with RMA’s finances. Externally she/he can be RMA’s outreach person with some agreed contacts along Mass Ave in the private sector, government, and nonprofits.
In the upcoming 12-24 months, RMA is planning specific projects that build on our 18 years of success increasing the tree canopy of Embassy Row. After some of our tree program paused due to city construction along a mile of our route, we are re-introducing ourselves to embassies and US owners of the important properties that line the historic Grand Avenue. As we build our portfolio of “green” projects, our small volunteer-led group will have many opportunities to partner with key urban forestry entities and continue the visible transformation of Mass Ave. The Executive Assistant can help develop RMA’s program and administrative capacity.
Note: She/he will work with the President, a lead Board member or an outside expert on the tasks below. We can tailor assignments based on the candidate's experience and preferences.

- Manage calendar of RMA projects, tasks and deadlines; follow up as needed for end-to-end results.
- Support donor engagement by coordinating year-end fundraising drives and assisting with RMA events.
- Assist with project accounting compatible with IRS and grantors.

Four hours per week, including monthly Board meetings, which are on the second Tuesday 5:30 - 6:45 pm, Zoom and in-person. Additional hours as needed and agreed.

The Executive Assistant should be able to visit Embassy Row part of Mass Ave easily, to be familiar with trees and landscape and see how the various stakeholders are involved. She/he should be able to attend meetings at RMA headquarters at 2500 Massachusetts Avenue when in-person sessions are preferred to Zoom.
Neighbor Ambassador – Volunteer
Use your diplomacy and love for nature to grow shade trees along Embassy Row! We seek volunteers who live or work on or near Mass Ave who want to help this famous street be shadier and more beautiful.
Restore Mass Ave has worked with most of the owners along our two-mile route. But recent turnover of US and foreign owners means we should re-introduce why this Grand Avenue is important and how they can help grow and sustain healthy trees here.
As a Neighbor Ambassador you’ll be our liaison with one or more properties you choose. An example could be the embassy of a country you visited, studied, or come from.
You’ll build friendships around your shared interest in cultivating and protecting trees, including city street trees. Regular RMA personnel will assist and teach. Our prize- winning guidebook A Grand Avenue Revival tells why this landscape matters.
Tasks
- Visit "your" agreed embassies and/or neighbors on Mass Ave to introduce them to RMA and hear their landscape needs, such as a dying tree or upcoming property work.
- Develop shared stewardship by showing them best practices from RMA’s Historic Landscape Guide.
- Help as needed "your" property's liaison with city officials and the State Department on urban forestry issues.
- Follow up regularly to continue productive, enjoyable relationships on behalf of RMA.
Requirements
- Live or work near the part of Mass Ave where we work (Dupont To Wisconsin Ave)
- Proactive, solutions-oriented, timely communicator.
- Outgoing with good intrapersonal skills.
- Comfortable and diplomatic in a variety of cultural settings
Preferred
- Background in international relations,
- Strong interest or background in forestry, horticulture, or landscape.
