DDOT presents its draft plan for Dupont Tree Plaza
Restore Mass Ave comments on the plan to local officials in charge of feedback
Below are Restore Mass Ave’s slides presented to the Mobility Committee of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2-B on June 18. The slides compare the DDOT plan with our plan; ours calls for a double row of shade trees, designed walking space and dusk-to-dawn lighting. We also said the Plaza should showcase the historic importance of this location where Embassy Row began.
DDOT DTP Program Manager Annie Tkacik took feedback from Commissioners, Deborah Shapley of RMA and Bill McLeod of the Dupont Circle Business Improvement District. The main issue discussed was having no bike stand on the Plaza “Concept B”, but the same number of docks added in other locations near Metro. RMA supports having the bikes elsewhere, to allow freedom of pedestrian movement, flexible uses of the space, and better siting of the trees.
Also Ana Harvey and Julian Hunt of Dupont Underground spoke about underground conditions by the old trolley tunnel entrance, which is on the Plaza site. Improving this as a main entrance will be a top priority in the next few years, they said.
The DDOT plan is preliminary; the next version is expected in September.
